![]() The word “camel” is letters written down in a certain combination – and does not look like, nor is, the thing that is a camel. The basic premise of the novel is this: language – the words we have – are concepts, not meant to literally be the things they represent. It will stay with you and puzzle and please you long after you have put it down. Some novels are easily read and quickly forgotten. You have to really pay attention while you read it, and learn – as the characters in the book do – the new language presented to you. ![]() I have never read anything like it, and neither have I ever encountered the premise, setting, plot or the words Miéville invented for this novel. It is set in a comprehensive, holistic, entirely new created world. This is a New Weird novel/thriller/sociological discourse (?) about Linguistics in society, or to be more precise – Semiotics – and even though I have a MA degree in the subject, it really intrigued and challenged me. ![]() ![]() But for first readers of this world, no idea. So only people who had read and loved the original books would understand the world and the strange use of words and would be happy to learn more about the background of the characters. The book sort maybe me think that this was written as a prequel, after a really successful trilogy. I don’t know, I’ve just read so many excellent fantasy books that have used made up fantasy words but they made sense within the world and plot, this book just did not. I don’t understand why day was replaced to ‘lights’ but night was kept. There are strange words that are used to replaced perfectly fine ones. ![]() The language was a bit simple but at other times not. This book is definitely more on the younger side of fantasy and maybe that’s one of the reasons why I struggled a bit. I think maybe, because of the blurb and the front cover, that I was just expecting a completely different book. I think I think I could really enjoy the idea of this book but it needs to be completely changed and rewritten. Hard to put into words to explain this properly. On one hand I was sort of motivated to pick it up and read on but on the other, I just really didn’t care.
